This month we’re introducing you to SkyKick’s engineering team. We hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know our outstanding Support team over the last few months. This week we’re featuring Katy Daviscourt, Software Engineer.

Describe your role

I’m a Software Engineer on the Backup product team, which means I write code to create new features and improve on existing features for Backup.

What do you like most about your role?

I love that my role lets me constantly learn new things! I have been here for over a year, and there literally has not been a day that I haven’t learned at least one new thing. My coworkers are incredibly supportive and encouraging, and I love that I get to contribute more and more to the team as I grow.

What do you find most interesting about the Backup product?

My favorite product is Backup and the feature I most like is the Backup Point in Time Restore, because it gives you so much more flexibility on what you want to restore.

You were recently promoted to Software Engineer. What advice would you give someone looking to get into this industry?
Just put yourself out there, try new things, make projects, and have fun. This job can be incredibly fun, so lean into it.

What attracted you to work at SkyKick?

I was immediately drawn to SkyKick’s innovative and exciting work culture. Not only are the people amazing, smart, and very funny, but everyone who works here cares about the product and making sure our partners are successful. You can feel the positive energy when you come in, and I knew within the first few minutes of being in the office that I wanted to work here.

What made you interested in learning to code?

It’s an interesting story. I was an America Sign Language interpreter and loved working with the Deaf Community but wanted to challenge myself in a different way. I enjoy solving the puzzle of making the code do what I want it to. As well, I love that even if I were somehow able to learn every single language and technology that existed, things change so quickly that I will never be bored – there is always growth as an engineer; even more true being an engineer at SkyKick.

As a female in engineering and the tech space in general, what advice do you have for women working in or wanting to get into tech?
Your voice is just as important as anyone else’s. In fact, maybe more so since diverse points of view can only improve a team and a product. Technology is such an awesome field to work in, so don’t be afraid to get involved and make your mark.

What is something about you that surprises people when they get to know you?
I can get competitive! Why play a game if you’re not going to keep score or try to win?

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Spending time with friends, reading and eating any and every type of dessert.

If you could choose a superpower, what would it be?
Teleportation for sure, I could go anywhere just for an afternoon.
